And eventually we give up, because it never seems to work.  There are times of peace and prosperity, but there are also the times of unrest and want.

Many Christians live what could only be described as a godless life.  They still go to church on Sunday, hoping that God will show up and bless them, but, knowing that he probably won’t, they spend the rest of their time producing their own life of prosperity.  In practice, the Creator-God is just another one of the pantheon of gods who must be appeased by a few minutes of worship in order to free us to go about our own desires.
